Introduction To Year 9 English 2013 - Turangawaewae

The purpose of this unit is to give you a sense of place in terms of your new school. It is also an opportunity for the class to get to know a bit about you and for you to get to know your teacher.

The unit plan covers the learning objectives, key competencies and values of the New Zealand curriculum.
The title of the unit ‘Turangawaewae – Our Place’ reflects the journeys and the story of the people who are part of Burnside High School. At Burnside we embrace the diversity of our students and celebrate the Maori heritage of the area. In this unit we will look at the Ti Kouka (the cabbage trees) and the school crest and motto.

After thinking about your favourite place to be on Waitangi day, and having looked at how Vivienne used the five senses to bring her poem to life, I want you to write a DESCIPTION of your favourite place to be on Waitangi day. Write these descriptions on your creative writing page on your blog.
Try to include the five senses and describe in detail so that somebody else reading your piece of writing could imagine what you are describing.
